Traveling to Huntington, WV

Huntington, West Virginia, population 51,475, is a beautiful university town with ample cultural, educational, recreational and sport opportunities. It is the hub of activities in the Tri-State area of West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky, and it is in the midst of an impressive economic, educational and urban development.

Marshall University, with its 16,000 students and more than 1,000 faculty members, offers unique cultural and educational opportunities. The university is expanding and achieving national prominence. There is a special emphasis on bio-technology, especially with a $45 million investment in the Robert C. Byrd Bio-Technology Building, Kinetic Technology Park and the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The community has top-rated public and private schools with strong parental participation. About 70 percent of county teachers have at least a master's degree. Huntington is a regional center of art and culture. The Huntington Museum of Art is the largest museum between Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Charlottesville, and it has many programs for children. There are other museums such as the Heritage Farm and Museum, the Museum of Medicine, Railroad Museum and others. Huntington is the home of the acclaimed Huntington Symphony Orchestra, the Marshall Artist Series and many other musical activities and programs.

Marshall University is the home of the "Thundering Herd," winner of two national football championships in its 40,000 seat stadium. Marshall University offers many exciting competitive sports including basketball, swimming, soccer, volleyball and others.

Downtown Huntington is undergoing an exciting revitalization. Pullman Square includes a 16-screen movie theatre, restaurants and retail stores. Many historic buildings are being restored, adding to the vitality and charm of the downtown area. Huntington has some of the best public parks, including the West Virginia's premier 70-acre Ritter Park and Harris Riverfront Park. There are many indoor and outdoor tennis courts, an outdoor amphitheater and a nationally recognized rose garden. Huntington has year-round recreational activities including boating, canoeing, kayaking, rafting, fishing, hunting, hiking, golfing, camping and other activities. You can enjoy the best skiing in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic United States only three hours away.
