Robotic Lung Surgery

Cabell Huntington Hospital has transformed the experience of lung surgery from an open-chest operation to a minimally invasive surgery for residents of the Tri-State region.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women. The American Cancer Society estimates that each year, more people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast and prostate cancers combined. With research estimating almost 225,000 Americans will be diagnosed with lung cancer this year, advances in robotic lung surgery are more important than ever.

By combining advanced robotic technology with experienced, skilled surgeons, Cabell Huntington Hospital has transformed the experience of lung surgery from an open-chest operation to a minimally invasive surgery for residents of the Tri-State region.

Mark Cooper, MD, PhD, thoracic surgeon, performs robotic lung surgery at CHH. "This advanced technology greatly improves patients' experiences by reducing pain, allowing a faster return home, and producing overall better outcomes," stated Cooper. "We are excited to bring this state-of-the-art procedure to the region."

Traditional lung cancer surgery requires a large incision, 8 to 10 inches, and commonly results in blood loss as well as a lengthy recovery. Dr. Cooper utilizes the da Vinci S HD® Surgical System to perform pulmonary lobectomy, the latest minimally invasive procedure to treat lung cancer.

For the majority of patients, da Vinci pulmonary lobectomy provides multiple benefits over traditional options, including:

  • Less pain
  • Fewer complications
  • Three to four dime-sized incisions
  • Decreased blood loss
  • Faster recovery
  • Quicker return to daily activities

Despite the serious prognosis of lung cancer, patients are being successfully treated and cured. Dr. Cooper is available to discuss treatment options with patients to help them consider if robotic surgery is a good choice for them. "Many patients who have been told surgery is not an option for them may not realize they are a candidate for robotic lung surgery. I am happy to review their care plan with them."

Dr. Cooper is a board-certified and fellowship-trained physician specializing in thoracic surgery. He performs surgery on the heart, lungs, esophagus and other organs in the chest and provides minimally invasive robotic surgery services. He has 27 years of experience in general and cardiothoracic surgery. He is also an Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery with the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine.

Dr. Cooper is accepting patients at Marshall Surgery, located at 1600 Medical Center Drive in Huntington. For more information, please call 304.691.1200.
